Why do you need to do this?
Companies must make sure that everyone on their worksite — including contractors and subcontractors — can share safety information and be involved in health, safety, and environmental (HSE) decisions. Even as a sole trader or small business, you have legal duties to communicate about HSE issues. Open communication helps prevent incidents and ensures everyone works together safely.
A simple response might be:
"Before starting work, I speak with my client about any site-specific safety or environmental risks. I ask questions about hazards and explain any safety concerns I notice. I’m happy to take part in safety briefings, toolbox talks, or other discussions to make sure we're on the same page. If I see something unsafe while working, I raise it straight away."
This shows you are proactive, open to communication, and willing to contribute to a safer work environment.
You need to describe how you currently communicate about health, safety, and environmental issues.
This could include how you discuss risks with clients, raise concerns, or share important safety information. Ideally, you should write this down in a short procedure or include it in your WHS plan to show that you have a clear and consistent approach to safety communication.
