Why do you need to do this?
Companies have legal duties to manage all contractors working for them, including checking that they meet appropriate health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards. When you work as a subcontractor, they must confirm that you are competent, qualified, and insured — and that you will follow their safety and environmental procedures. If you use subcontractors, they also need to know that you’re managing them responsibly and legally.
A simple response if you engage subcontractors might be:
"I make sure they have the right licences, insurance, and experience for the job. I follow my client’s safety procedures and make sure any subcontractors I use do the same. I also hold current public liability insurance and the necessary qualifications for my own work."
This shows you understand your role and responsibilities within their contractor management system.
You should provide details of how you currently manage any subcontractors you use.
Even if you only use them occasionally, you should write down your process — for example, how you check their qualifications, communicate safety expectations, or ensure they follow site rules. This can be included in your contractor management procedure or documented in a simple checklist.
