Safe Work Method Statements

Why do you need to do this?

Under Australian WHS law, a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is required before starting any high risk construction work — such as working at height, using powered mobile plant, working near roads, trenches, or electrical installations. However, many companies also require a SWMS (or similar document) for any high risk work, even outside construction, to ensure there is a clear, step-by-step plan to manage safety. This helps show that you understand the risks involved in your work and how to control them.

You need to prepare a SWMS that covers the following:

  • The specific high risk tasks you carry out (e.g. working at height, using machinery, working near traffic or electricity)

  • The hazards and risks involved in those tasks

  • The control measures you use to reduce or eliminate those risks

  • A step-by-step explanation of how you carry out the work safely

  • Who is responsible for each part of the task (even if it's just you)

Your SWMS doesn’t need to be site-specific when uploading for a prequalification but should reflect the actual high risk activities you undertake in your business.

This shows you understand when a SWMS is needed and that you’ve prepared documentation to manage the risks of your high risk tasks.
