Why do you need to do this?
Under Australian WHS law, a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is required before starting any high risk construction work — such as working at height, using powered mobile plant, working near roads, trenches, or electrical installations. However, many companies also require a SWMS (or similar document) for any high risk work, even outside construction, to ensure there is a clear, step-by-step plan to manage safety. This helps show that you understand the risks involved in your work and how to control them.
You need to prepare a SWMS that covers the following:
The specific high risk tasks you carry out (e.g. working at height, using machinery, working near traffic or electricity)
The hazards and risks involved in those tasks
The control measures you use to reduce or eliminate those risks
A step-by-step explanation of how you carry out the work safely
Who is responsible for each part of the task (even if it's just you)
Your SWMS doesn’t need to be site-specific when uploading for a prequalification but should reflect the actual high risk activities you undertake in your business.
This shows you understand when a SWMS is needed and that you’ve prepared documentation to manage the risks of your high risk tasks.
